It was back to having fun with Percy Jackson, in this fourth book of the series. In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Riordan introduces the reader to a new character: Rachel Elizabeth Dare, a classmate of Percy's who is described as "a clear-sighted mortal," given that she can see through the mist that prevents most mortals from observing the gods and monsters. It is clear from the beginning that Rachel would play a larger role as the story progressed, and she does. Fortunately, Grover, Tyson, and Annabeth, Percy's friends are back to accompany him through his adventure and struggle with their own. There is a sweetness Riordan introduces in how he projects Calypso on her island and the gift she gives Percy, which will come to blossom in his fifth book. After a bit of a disappointment with the third book, it was wonderful to care about the characters again and enjoy Riordan's plot and his updating of those old Greek gods. Hee hee
