This book was requisite summer reading for my campus. It was written by two elementary teachers, whose teaching experiences have been mostly in rural, Title 1 schools. Before moving to Arizona, I taught at an alternative campus in a very large urban district. All of our students came from Title 1 high schools, but, for 1 year, I taught at the elementary level in an affluent, suburban district. Never had I worked with such collaborative and self-sacrificing teachers! Of course, those little burger-bears will love you into working yourself to death for them! So, one big shout out to the elementary teachers of the world! Having said this, I wish these teachers would write a book for parents. So few parents receive guidance for rearing their children, and many of the things Brock and Hundley discuss, such as raising children with "perseverance, grit, work ethic, motivation, time management, self-efficacy, and relationship skills" (p. 175) are non-academic albeit exceedingly important. There are jewels scattered throughout. Here's one from page 43, Brian Herbert is cited: "The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice." I cited this text throughout my "Course Description" for the coming year, a document that all parents receive. I was also inspired to create a hands-on first day activity specific to learning as a nonlinear process. So, can you hear how much I garnered from this book? However, it was not without concerted effort. Politically speaking the authors and I come from different planets. If I had to label the political swing of this book, I would identify it as socialism; I lean more toward libertarianism. The philosophical divide between us felt as wide and deep as the Grand Canyon.
