There is a new favorite character introduced in Riordan's second book in the Percy Jackson series, and his name is Tyson. Now here is a baby Cyclops that everyone can love! Tyson teaches all of us what it means to be loyal and fearless in protecting those we love. Percy learns this himself by the book's end and comes to embrace his half-brother Tyson. Percy's brother stands in such contrast to the giant Polyphemus who Odysseus so ingeniously outsmarts in the ancient Greek epic The Odyssey and who Percy must also outmaneuvre. Readers familiar with The Odyssey might obtain even more enjoyment while reading this book than those who are unknowledgeable because it adds to the delight. Riordan transforms classic events into his gratifying plot, involving eighth graders on adventure in The Sea of Monsters. As my freshmen read The Odyssey second semester, this book, which they will enjoy on its own accord, will familiarize them with many of the monsters and gods they will be encountering in the Greek epic poem. Riordan, touché!
